PROGRAM

Topic of Symposium: Film music recordings in Vienna

On 02.10.2013, the FIMU Vienna Symposium will take place in the prestigious Max Reinhardt Seminar. The venue was chosen in honor of two - time Academy Award winner James Horner, whose father Harry Horner was a close companion of Max Reinhardt .

James Horner and his work for Hollywood

James Horner (composer of "Titanic", "Avatar"," Braveheart", and many others) will  also deal with the main topic of the symposium and share his experience with orchestral recordings for the film. He will furthermore explain his compositions to popular movies, supported by film and music examples .

Next, Steve Bramson ("JAG", "Navi CSI", "Enemy Hands", "Disney's Space Mountain" ), will talk about the difference of composing as well as  soundtrack recordings for film versus television and Disney Theme Parks.

We will also expire the work of Sound-engineering through Emmy- and Grammy- winner and 4-times Academy Award nominated Dennis Sands, who is one of the most successful Sound Engineers in America.

Vienna - the new capital of film music?

In the course of our symposia in recent years, the desire for a flexible orchestra for film music recordings has been a repeated issue. In the end of 2012 , dreams became reality: The Max Steiner Film Music Orchestra was established and is now available for national and international sound track recordings for film and media. It combines outstanding musicians from the best orchestras in Austria.

Furthermore, as already announced the media, the Vienna Symphonic Library will establish a brand new soundstage at the Vienna Rosenhuegel Location (former film city of Vienna) for film music recordings, that will – in its quality – be comparable to the most advanced studios in London and L.A. Also, the Vienna scoring stage was founded by Andreas Rathammer, aiming to produce film music recordings in other halls of Vienna.

Because of this new, exciting development this year’s focus will be on film music studio recordings for film and media. Leading personalities from Hollywood will provide their extensive experience in this field.

Hollywood Recording Sessions

The Oscar-nominated composer and conductor David Newman, who also conducts the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna for "Hollywood in Vienna" and already wrote more than 100 film scores (including »The War of the Roses« ,»Ice Age«), will – together with Dennis Sands – first explain the theoretical basis for film music recordings.

Then the »Max Steiner Orchestra« itself take the stage, conducted by David Newman. As part of a showcases the film music recording situation is simulated - with screen and streamers, clicks of the musicians ( he audible for the audience ) and the persons responsible for production, orchestration, sound recording and music preparation . Then, several scenarios that differ from conventional recordings will be illustrated in an informative as well as entertaining and way. Dennis Sands, who has already participated in numerous film music productions , will lead this recording session .
The symposium  will be concluded by a panel of Austrian and international experts, who discuss the latest developments of the Viennese film and music industry, such as the importance of developing the new Viennna Soundstaeg as well as  the establishment of the "Max Steiner Orchestra ".
